Open the files on your NAS from your iPhone and iPad

NAS Wildcard lets you browse the shared folders on your Synology or WebDAV NAS and open files straight from them. Play a movie, listen to an album, read a book or check a log file without copying anything to your phone first.

Who it’s for

People who keep their media and documents on a NAS and want to get at them from an iPhone or iPad, without running a media server like Plex or Jellyfin. There’s no server to install and configure, no library to scan, and no metadata to fix when it matches the wrong movie. The app shows your folders exactly as they are on the NAS.

What it opens

• Video

  MKV, MP4, AVI, AV1 and other formats, including files with several audio and subtitle tracks. The NAS sends the file as it is, so it never has to convert it.

• Music

  MP3, AAC, FLAC, Opus, OGG and more. A folder plays as an album, with cover art, background playback and lock-screen controls.

• Photos and comics

  Swipe through the photos in a folder, or read CBZ and CBR comics page by page.

• Books and PDFs

  EPUB, Kobo kepub and PDF. EPUBs can be read in pages or as one long scroll, with a table of contents, adjustable text size and light, sepia and dark themes.

• Text and code

  Large log files open quickly because the app loads them in parts. Source code gets syntax highlighting and line numbers, and Markdown and AsciiDoc are formatted with their images.

• Archives

  Browse inside zip, tar, 7z and RAR files as if they were folders, and open the files in them. Compressed tars (.tar.gz and similar) and RAR archives that are solid, split into parts or encrypted can be downloaded, but not browsed.

• Mac disk images

  Browse inside .dmg, .sparseimage and .sparsebundle images the same way, if they are unencrypted and formatted Mac OS Extended (HFS+). APFS images aren’t supported yet.

Works with

Synology DiskStation, using your DSM user account. Any NAS or server that supports WebDAV, such as TrueNAS, UGREEN, OpenMediaVault, Nextcloud or rclone. The app lists the NAS devices it finds on your network, or you can enter an address yourself. The app works on your home network; access from outside it is coming later. Requires iOS 17 or later.

Privacy

The app sends your data only to your NAS. It has no analytics, no ads and no sign-up. Your password is stored in the Keychain on your device.
